What we find once the old siding comes off
Old siding rarely fails on its own. It fails at the seams: a gap at a window trim, a lap that was never caulked right, a corner post that let wind driven rain behind the panel during a nor'easter. How Tim rebuilds the wall, not just the surface
The crew strips the old siding down to the studs first, on the whole elevation, not just the section that looks bad. That is the only way to actually see what is underneath.
Any sheathing that is soft, delaminating, or stained from water gets cut out and replaced with new plywood, cut and nailed to match the existing framing. Covering rotted sheathing with new siding instead of replacing it is how a house ends up with the same problem again in a few years.
Once the wall is sound, house wrap goes on, taped and lapped the right direction so water runs down and out instead of behind the next layer. Trim, soffit, and fascia get rebuilt or refreshed at every opening before the new siding goes on over the top.

After the job, keep an eye on the caulking at trim joints and around window and door casings. Caulk is the one part of a siding job that ages faster than the siding itself, and a gap there is exactly the kind of thing that let water in the first time.
